What should the best man wear?

The best man is without a doubt the most important person for the groom at any wedding. Whether it’s safekeeping the wedding ring, seeing to it that all the things are at their right place and where they are supposed to be, taking care of the guests, and of course ensuring the groom is at his best, the best man definitely has some crucial responsibilities on his shoulders. After all, isn’t he the groom’s right hand man?

Considering this, it goes without saying that the best man deserves to look and feel the best, and at the same time doesn’t overshadow the groom on his most special day. Is that possible? Yes! We will show you how.

There are a lot of factors to consider before you as a best man put your finger on a bespoke suit you like. Take into account the wedding location, whether it’s indoors or outdoors, what time of the day (and year) it will take place, and whether the wedding is an informal, a semi-formal, or a formal one. All these parameters are decisive enough to make or break your overall ensemble.

  1. Based on the time of the year

Winter and autumn

In these seasons you wouldn’t want to go for a thin fabric suit and catch a cold. This should be the last thing happening to the best man on his best bud’s special day. Autumn and winter call for warm, thick fabrics. Suit material is no exception. Which fabrics would be the best for your best man’s suit, you ask? There are several options: 100% wool, wool and silk blend, and wool and tweed that weighs a minimum of 270 g/m. When it comes to the type of suit you can choose, go for a black tux or a three-piece suit of dark shades of blue and grey, such as midnight blue and charcoal grey.

Summer and spring

On the contrary to what you would wear during winter and autumn, it’s best to opt for lighter fabrics during the warmer seasons of summer and spring. Wear a blend of silk and wool which doesn’t exceed 260 g/m. Feel your best without compromising your look.

  1. Based on the location

Beach

Beach is jolly. Beach is warm. You’ll want to wear something light and breathable at a cheery location like this. Our recommendations are linen, cotton, and even better – a blend of linen and cotton to get the best of both worlds.

Urban

It’s best to adopt the colours of the cityscape for a wedding based in an urban locale. All classic colours would suit this theme, including black, blue, grey, and tan.

Country

More often than not, if the wedding is in the countryside scheduled in the evening, then the weather would be a little cold. You can prefer a blend of wool and silk in that case in dark colours. On the other hand, if it’s a morning or an afternoon wedding, then it’s safe to say that the weather would be warm, if not hot altogether. You can confidently explore thin linen suits in this scenario. An alternative is a wool and cotton blend.

What accessories should I go for as the best man?

  1. Shirt

A white shirt is an evergreen classic, not only for the groom but for the best man as well. A French cuff is a good choice, and so is a silk tie.

  1. Shoes

Matt black formal shoes are a go-to choice, but if you feel like experimenting a little, then incorporate a thing or two. However, do keep in mind that there’s a fine line between curating an ensemble and overdoing it!

  1. Socks

Socks give enough room to experiment! Even if you are dressed up in a formal suit, you can don some funky socks and it still might not look odd! You can also opt for solid colours, stipes, or diamond patterns.
