You spend so much money on a good quality bespoke suit and it’s important to look after it. A few easy steps can help you add years to your suits life. The small rules that make up suit care are simple –
Wearing your suit – Wrong wearing habits are one of the biggest reasons for the irreplaceable damage caused to a suit.
• Avoid carrying bulky items or heavy sets of keys in your suit as this can strain the pockets and the pointed items such as keys can catch on linings.
• Always unbutton your jacket before sitting down as this could cause the fabric to go through unnecessary stress.
• Don’t wear the same suit two days in a row, as clothing typically needs at least a day of rest to breathe
• Hang up the suit on a wide wooden hanger as soon as you are done wearing it.
• As the trouser goes a lot more wear and tear than your jacket, having an extra pair of trousers can also increase the life of your suit
Cleaning & Ironing – Its common perception that your suits needs to get dry cleaned if it gets dirty or wrinkled. But experts say dry cleaning should happen only 2-3 times a year.
• A regular brushing of the suit will shrug off the dust
• Try and clean stains immediately so they don’t become stubborn
• Press the suit if they get wrinkled, a hand held steamer and trouser press will do the job for every day wear.
• When ironing your suit, keep the heats setting moderate and use a clean cotton cloth over the suit to avoid damage to delicate fabrics and avoid shine marks from the ironing.
Storing & protecting your suit –
• It is recommended that you let the suit dry out completely before putting it in the air tight bag after you have worn it during the day.
• Store the suits in a place where they can breathe, as lack of air can make the fabric die and you may find mold or moths attacking your favorite tailor made suit.
• Keep them on a hanger (preferably a cedar wood hanger as it also works as a repellant from moths), always upright in a closet.
• Mothballs can keep the moths away from your suit but the smell is unpleasant. Dried lavender leaves in sealed punches will protect your suit from moths without the drawback of the awful smell of mothballs.
