Roshni Anand is a fashion designer and the founder of Bentex Suits, a custom tailoring house with showrooms in Sydney CBD and Castle Hill. She founded Bentex in 2008 and has spent her working life in the fashion industry.
That career started well before Bentex did. Years spent in fashion, watching how trends arrive, hold and pass, and learning what actually lasts once the season is over. It is the reason a Bentex suit tends to look current without looking dated a year later.
Most tailoring businesses are started by tailors. Bentex was started by a designer, and that changes what happens in the fitting room.
A tailor takes a measurement. A designer looks at proportion first, then works out how to cut for it. Roshni was trained to think about line, balance and how cloth falls on a body before she ever thought about a seam allowance. It is why a Bentex consultation opens with a conversation about the person and the occasion rather than a tape measure.
The same training shows in the detail most people never notice. Measurements at Bentex include posture notes, a dropped shoulder or a forward stance, because a suit cut without them will pull no matter how accurate the numbers were. It is the difference between a suit that fits and a suit that sits.
After years in fashion, Roshni kept running into the same problem. Plenty of beautiful clothing was being made. Very little of it was being made for the person actually wearing it.
So in 2008 she started Bentex Suits on one idea: that a suit should be built for the body in front of you, not adjusted until it more or less works. Nearly two decades later that has not changed, and it is still the thing she says in the first ten minutes of a consultation.
Every Bentex suit is made to measure or fully bespoke, and both start the same way. An appointment, a conversation about the occasion, the budget and the style, then fabric.
There are more than 5,000 fabrics in the showrooms, including cloth from Loro Piana, Drago and Holland & Sherry. Roshni will narrow that to a handful before a client has to make a decision, which is the part clients mention most often. Choosing between five thousand options is not a service. Choosing between four is.
She still works directly with a large share of Bentex clients, particularly wedding parties, alongside a team she has trained to work the same way.
Women’s suits are drafted from a women’s block, for the bust, waist and hip. They are not a men’s pattern resized. That sounds obvious and it is still unusual, and it is a designer’s instinct rather than a tailor’s habit.
Both showrooms run by appointment only. That is deliberate. It means a private room, a dedicated consultant and the full fabric range, rather than a shared shop floor.
