Michael & Courtney: A Tweed Suit for a Winter Wedding in Kangaroo Valley

Some weddings are built around a colour. This one was built around a texture. Michael married Courtney in July at the Rock Cathedral, a sandstone amphitheatre hidden in the bush at Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat, and he did it in a deep green tweed three piece that belongs to that landscape the way a dinner suit belongs to a ballroom.
Why tweed, and why winter is its moment
A July wedding in the valley is a cold-weather brief. Mornings in single digits, golden light by late afternoon, and a ceremony held outdoors between rock walls. That is exactly the job tweed was made for. It is a woven wool with real weight and a surface full of life, warm enough to stand outside in and structured enough to hold a silhouette all day. On our scale of suit fabric weights it sits firmly at the winter end, and unlike a fine worsted it looks better the closer you get.
The cloth here is a deep green flecked with blue and rust, the kind of surface that reads almost solid at ten paces and turns into a hundred small decisions up close. Against sandstone, gum trees and winter grass, it photographs like it was commissioned for the venue.
The suit itself
A three piece, but not a matching one. The jacket and trousers are the green tweed; the waistcoat is a contrasting brown tweed, and that one choice does most of the styling work. It breaks the column of green, picks up the timber and stone around it, and lets the burgundy tie and paisley pocket square sit naturally between the two. A white shirt, a wax-flower boutonniere, and that is the whole formula. Nothing in it is loud, and nothing in it is accidental.
Inside the jacket is our favourite detail of the day. Above the pocket, stitched into the green, one word and one date:
Ohana. 18 | 07 | 2026.
A suit off a rack cannot do that. A made to measure suit is finished with the things that matter to the person wearing it, and this one carries its own wedding day on the inside.
The day itself
Courtney wore a strapless white ballgown, and the wedding party carried the palette between them: bridesmaids in deep wine, a groomsman in a burgundy suit, others in green, so the whole group reads like the valley in winter. Vows under the rock walls with a fern-green backdrop, guests tucked into the amphitheatre, winter sun overhead.
And then the reward for marrying in July: a golden-hour climb to the escarpment, the valley falling away behind them, low sun through the winter grass. The last frames of the evening are the two of them on the edge of the lookout, and Michael’s tweed doing exactly what tweed does in that light.
