When you think of suit quality, these are the few things that come to mind –
Numero Uno being the look (fit) of the suit
Number 2 would be the fabric quality – how good the fabric feels the content of the fabric.
But have any of you paid attention to the construction of your tailor Made business suit or wedding suit? Like most things in life there is more to what catches your eye, even when it comes to your bespoke suit. Your suit quality does not just depend on the fabric and the fit; it is hugely dependant on the construction of your suit as well.
In this blog we will discuss different types of suit jacket construction – Fused Jackets and Canvassed Jacket. You might think why are we discussing this but please read on as the construction of your jacket will make a huge difference in the price and quality of your suit.
2 of the biggest advantages of canvassed suits jackets are – they drape better on body and they last longer than your fused jackets. Before we tell you more about canvassed suits let us tell you what canvas is. Canvas is fabric made of wool and horsehair that sits between the suit shell fabric and the inside lining of you jacket.
In tailor made suits the canvas is floating so it is not stitched onto tightly to the jacket which helps in achieving the structure and shape of the suit. Floating canvassed suits take shape of your body over the time so the better they fit the more you wear them.
Tailor made suits come with 2 different types of canvassed suits – one is full canvassed suits and the 2nd is half canvassed suits. As the name suggested full canvassed suits have full canvas (entire front panel and lapels canvassed) which makes the suit drape better and fit better on body. Full canvassed suit constructions are time consuming and require high level of skills so are more expensive! Half canvassed suits on the other hand have canvas only on top chest and lapel hence are cheaper when compared to full canvas suits.
A quick word on Fused jackets – Most suits that you get off-the-rack on huge chain stores are usually fused suits and NOT canvassed. Fusing is a paper like stiff material which used in between with shell fabric of your suit and the inside lining fabric. This fusing fabric is glued onto the shell fabric of your suit to give the jacket shape but does not drape well as it is stiff in nature and can bubble over a period of time.
So why does it exist? It is cost effective and does not require skilled labor and serves its purpose in mass market. But then they say you get what you pay for! So why would you want to spend money on fused suits knowing they will not fit well or last you that long.
With our half floating canvassed suits you will get the benefits of the natural drape and shape that canvas provides where the suit needs it the most – the chest and the lapel. At the same time, you enjoy some cost savings in terms of materials and labor.
